Bears
The bike relay course is through some of the most beautiful wilderness in southern Yukon, northern BC as well as the world famous Chilkat Eagle Preserve in Alaska. This wilderness is home to many animals including grizzly bears. In most years grizzly's can be seen feeding on the vegetation along the roadsides, which is snow -free earlier. The route is patrolled prior to the race for bear signs and any sightings are passed on at the Captain's meeting on Fri. night or in the pre-race instructions at the start on Saturday.
Bears on the Roadside
These bears are generally feeding but may cross the road at any time. Riders who spot bears are encouraged to wait until a vehicle can accompany them past the bear, keeping the vehicle between the bike and bear.
Bears Around Checkpoints
Occasionally bears have been spotted near checkpoints. There are RCMP officers and wildlife officers patrolling the route and the radio club is able to contact these people should bears be seen in the area. Please inform the Checkpoint Marshall if you see a bear.
