The 21st annual race is on June 15th, 2013!

More recollections from Past KCIBRs

I think that putting some of the history on the website is a great idea-especially with the anniversary coming. Here are a couple of
corrections and additions.

* Susan Bell, City of Haines (not Chamber of Commerce).

* I am sad to report that I have missed a few years.

* The first year was part of a cross-border celebration called Dalton Trail Days. The event commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Haines
Highway (constructed in 1943-one year after the Alaska highway).

* The City of Haines really wanted a signature event that was similar to the Klondike Road Relay. A mid-winter meeting in Haines Junction
between the respective Chambers of Commerce and me as the City of Haines Tourism Director resulted in the commitment

* I can't say enough good things about Pat Egan. He was out of town during the initial planning meeting, but was conscripted by Haines Junction
residents. He added a lot of valuable input concerning safety, timing, and Yukon involvement.

* The date was moved after the first year because of the conflict with the Nick Frangos Memorial race/ride, which was important to Juneau
riders.

* John Wray, on behalf of cyclists in Juneau, was very helpful in supporting the Kluane to Chilkat Bike Relay after the first event-especially
concerning bike safety.

More in First Race, from Pat Egan

So just to follow up on the bike race I thought you might want some info on the original year of the race for the web site:

• original race was part of a four day cross border celebration between the communities of Haines Alaska and Haines Junction Yukon on July 3rd, 1993
• July 1st - Canada Day Parade at Haines Junction
• July 2nd - Pine Lake boat regatta
• July 3rd - Haines to Haines Bike Relay Race
• July 4th - Independence Day Parade at Haines Alaska
• in 1994 the race was moved to the 3rd Saturday in June to avoid the heavy holiday traffic normally encountered on the Haines Highway during the July 1st and 4th Holidays
• the original committee was made up of Darryl White - Recreation Manager for the Village of Haines Junction, Pat Egan RCMP, Tom Ely Sockeye Cycle in Haines Alaska and Susan Bell Haines Chamber of Commerce
• approximate number of participants 1993 - 175/ 1994 - 470/ 1995 - 750/ 1996 close to 1000 and then the event was capped at 1200 riders  thereafter ........(Tom Ely will be sending you the original results sheets in the next few weeks or so)
