Is this your first time riding the KCIBR?
If this is your first time riding the KCIBR (or if you don't have a great memory from previous years), here are some useful things to remember:
- First, read the rules! There are some definite do's and don'ts.
- Pay attention to the road closure times and different race start times.
- If you do not have strong experience "drafting" with other cyclists, this is NOT the place to learn.
- Supporting your rider: First, please do NOT shadow your rider (that is, do NOT drive behind your rider at their cycling speed; this is incredibly dangerous for others on the road and your team will be disqualified). One approach which does work well for teams is to pull over on the shoulder of the road and let your rider go ahead of you for 10, 20, or 30 minutes (or whatever time is right for them). Drive up to and past them to a safe place where you can pull off on the shoulder of the road, get out of your vehicle, and then offer them whatever they need (drink, food, and words of encouragement!). Then, let them ride on ahead of you again. Using this method, you will quickly find your rider if they are having mechanical or other problems without having to turn around and go searching for them. Most support vehicles will go past the rider when they are within 5 kms of the next checkpoint (especially if you need to drop off the next rider).
- Have FUN! This is a recreational, international, cross-border biking event. We can't control the weather or the wind, but YOU can make sure you and your team have a safe and fun day!
